My Internet Isn't Working

Learn what to do if your Internet or WiFi connection isn't working.

FAQs

I’m not connected to the internet. No webpages will load and I can’t send or receive email.

Unplug the power cord from the back of the modem. If you also have a router (for home/wireless networking), please unplug its power cable as well. After 10-15 seconds, plug the modem back in. Wait 10-15 seconds for the router to acquire the connection and send it out to your network, then test your connectivity – check webpages and email.

If this didn’t work, check the following: Have you moved the modem to a different room? When your modem was installed, only one outlet in your home was made active for Internet connectivity. If you’ve moved the modem since then, try moving it back to its original location.

I can view webpages, but I can’t send or receive email.

Your device may have multiple mailboxes to choose from. Please ensure the correct mailbox is selected. If you are not able to find your mailbox, your email probably isn’t set up properly in your email program (Outlook, Windows LiveMail, Apple Mail, etc). Learn how to set up your email.

I can send and receive email, but I can’t view webpages.

You could have a problem with your web browser. Some 3rd party toolbars can cause conflicts with the proper functioning of the browser. For Windows computers, you can try running your browser without Add-ons. Also, most web browsers have an option to reset the browser to default settings. This can usually be found in the Advanced Settings of the browser Internet Options (Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Reset).

  • Login to your WiFi modem interface by opening a web browser, like IE or Firefox, entering 192.168.0.1 in the address bar and press Enter on your keyboard. Once the login page loads, enter the username: admin and password: password.
  • In your WiFi modem interface, go to the Basic Setup page of the Wireless tab and ensure that Wireless 2.4 GHz is set to “Enabled”.
  • On your computer or device, double-click the wireless networks icon to check your list of available wireless networks in range. Does your own wireless network name appear in the list?
  • If not, or if it does but you are unable to connect to it, it is possible that interference from other devices in your home may be preventing the connection.
  • Some sources of interference include: cordless phones, microwave ovens, baby monitors, etc. Move these devices away from the WiFi modem (to the other side of the room, or a different room entirely) and test your connection again.
  • On the Wireless section of your WiFi modem interface ensure the Control Channel is set to Auto.
  • Within the Wireless section you will see several different types of password encryptions you can try. The most compatible setting for password encryption is: AES + TKIP.
  • You can also try resetting the modem to factory default settings by pressing the pinhole reset button on the back of the modem and holding it for 15 seconds.  (This will reset your SSID and password to the modem default values)
