  • Sometimes you may want to exclude a file or folder from the scan. Excluded items are not scanned unless you remove them from the excluded items list.

Note: Scheduled scanning uses the same settings as the manual scanning.
    • Open Eastlink Internet Security Services
    • Select Tools
    • From the drop down list under Virus Scan Options choose Change Scanning Settings
    • Click the Exclude files from the scan link. The Exclude from scanning dialog box is displayed
  • Depending on what you want to exclude from scanning, do one of the following:
  • To exclude a file, drive, or folder:
  • Select the Objects tab
  • Select the Exclude objects (files, folders…) check box
  • Click Add
  • Select the file, drive, or folder that you want to exclude from virus scanning
Note: Some drives may be removable drives, such as CD, DVD or network drives. Network drives and empty removable drives cannot be excluded.
  • Click OK to close the Exclude from scanning dialog box
  • To exclude a specific file type:
  • Select the File Types tab
  • Select the Exclude files with these extensions check box
  • Type the file extension (do not include the ‘.’ ie (pdf, doc), which identifies the type of files you want to exclude, in the field next to the Add button
  • Click Add
  • Repeat the steps 3 and 4 for any other extension you want to exclude from scanning
  • Click OK to close the Exclude from scanning dialog box
Note: Some files cannot be excluded and will always be scanned, such as executable files.
  • Applications can only be added to the exclusion list if the scan flags that this application is suspicious. You will be presented with an option to exclude it when this occurs. If the application behaves like a virus or other malicious software you will not be presented with the option to exclude it.
  • To manage the applications that are excluded from scanning:
    • Open Eastlink Internet Security Services
    • Select Tools
    • From the drop down list under Virus Scan Options choose Change Scanning Settings
    • Click the Exclude files from the scan link. The Exclude from scanning dialog box is displayed.

    • Select the Applications tab
    • Choose application to be removed, click Remove
  • You can prevent applications on your computer from downloading harmful files from the Internet.

    • Check that the Windows date and time are correct because incorrect settings can cause the product to report that your virus definitions are out of date even though this is not the case.
Note: You can see the date and time in the Windows system tray. You can change the clock settings in the Date and Time Properties. To open the properties, double-click the clock.
  • If the clock/date is correct or if updating did not help:

  • It is not necessary to scan your hard drive manually as long as you have set up scheduled scanning. Virus and spyware scanning includes real-time scanning.

Note: Scanning for malware is an intensive process. It requires the full power of your computer and takes some time to complete.  For this reason, you might want to set the program to scan your computer when you are not using it.  Subsequent scans will be faster as they only scan for changes made since the previous scan.
  • You can set the program to scan your computer at regular times, for example, weekly, daily, or monthly.
  • To set up a scheduled scan:
    • Open Eastlink Internet Security Services and click Computer Security
    • On the main page of Computer Security, click Settings
    • Select Other settings > Scheduled scanning
    • Select Turn on scheduled scanning
    • Select which days you would like to scan for viruses and spyware regularly
    • Select the time when you want to start the scan on the selected days
    • Click OK
