To confirm if your internet connection is running as expected, you can conduct a speed test in the following ways:
  • For desktop computers, please visit http://speedtest.eastlink.ca (html 5 version) or http://speedtest.net (requires Flash player) to run a speedtest.
  • For Android devices, please install the Ookla Speedtest.net app from the Google Play Store.
  • For Apple devices, please install the Ookla Speedtest.net app from the Apple appstore.
Expect results of at least 80% of your subscribed speed on a wired connection (Note: the 80% guideline is not applicable when connecting through Wi-Fi, Rural Connect or DSL services).
  • There are many external factors that can impact Wi-Fi speed that would fall outside of our control.  A wired connection will give you the most accurate speed results.
  • If you only have Wi-Fi devices available, click here for more tips on improving Wi-Fi range and speed.
Ensure you have an anti-virus program installed and schedule virus scans to run regularly.  If you do not have anti-virus software on your computer, please see Eastlink Internet Security Services.
Moving the modem away from the originally installed location can have a negative impact on the Internet performance. We would recommend to either return it to the original installed location or contact us for a professional modem relocate.
Older computer hardware such as processor speed, network adapter, the amount of available memory and the operating system may not be capable of today’s faster speeds.
  • Running a speed test with only one device connected will provide you with the most accurate speed results.
  • Some older devices that are not capable of higher speeds, can slow down all devices on the network.
If you have a router, try bypassing the router by connecting the modem directly to one computer with an ethernet cable. Then run speed test again.
Having multiple applications running on your computers/devices at the same time can slow down your computer’s processing power.  Close as many applications as you can and run the speed test again.
Check the Ethernet cable for any visible sign of damage and try another, if possible. If replacement is necessary, ensure that you replace it with Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable.
Run a speed test, or check speeds from more than one website.
Check and track your speeds at different times throughout the day.
